These are offered under such brand names as Polo Ralph Lauren, Safari, Black Label, Club Monaco and Rugby. The company operates over 300 Ralph Lauren, Club Monaco, and Rugby retail stores, as well as a pair of e-commerce sites. Its products are also carried by upscale and mid-tier department stores. Macy's (NYSE: M) and Dillard's (NYSE: DDS) account for more than a third of all wholesale revenue. Jones Apparel Group (NYSE: JNY) and Liz Claiborne (NYSE: LIZ) are competitors.

The company pleased investors late last month, when it reported fiscal Q4 EPS of $1.00 and revenues of $1.24 billion. Analysts had been looking for 65 cents and $1.15 billion. Management also guided FY09 EPS to $3.95-$4.05 ($3.97 consensus). Needham subsequently reiterated its "buy" rating on the shares and boosted its price target to $79.

The stock popped on the news and then moved into a bullish "flag" consolidation pattern. Prices frequently exit flags moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Altogether, brokers recommend the issue with four "buys", eight "holds" and one "sell". Analysts see a 15% growth rate, through the next year. The RL P/E ratio (16.26), PEG ratio (1.03), Price to Sales ratio (1.32), Price to Book ratio (2.70), Price to Cash Flow ratio (10.36), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (14.06), Sales Growth rate (20.32%), EPS Growth rate (47.06%), Return on Assets (10.34%) and Return on Investment (12.77%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 500 Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $50.51 and $102.58. A stop-loss of $57.00 looks good here.

I don't currently have a retailer in my portfolio, so I'm thinking to myself, hey, maybe I'll want to buy Liz after I check out its latest numbers. Well, that didn't happen.

Net sales (excluding discontinued operations) dropped 3% for the fourth quarter, and adjusted net income declined dramatically, coming in at $0.20 per diluted share -- last year at this time, the metric was over four times as big at $0.94. For the year, net sales dropped over 1% (excluding discontinued operations), and adjusted net income was $1.30 per diluted share -- yet another huge drop, considering that Liz Claiborne took in $2.99 per diluted share of adjusted net income in 2006. Oh, and there are other things here that will make any prospective investor shudder -- operational cash flow was down, the dividend was stagnant, and the margins weren't anything to write home about. And comps at some of the company's stores have been challenged (Juicy Couture, however, did report a strong 25% increase in comparable sales in the fourth quarter).

This was an easy one for me -- I'll stay away from Liz Claiborne. The company, which competes with the likes of Jones Apparel Group (NYSE: JNY) and Polo Ralph Lauren (NYSE: RL), currently exists in the land of strategic reviews, cost reductions, and discontinued operations. I don't want to travel to such a land with this particular business.

Disclosure: Steven Mallas owns none of the companies mentioned.

When the government reports surprisingly strong retail sales for January, with clothes in particular up 1.4% during the month, that fact can only help a clothing retailer.

Jones, still executing its restructuring plan, said its fourth-quarter net loss narrowed to $89.8 million, or $1.06 per share, from $269.5 million, or $2.51 per share, last year. Without the gain on the sale of its high-end department-store chain, Barneys New York, and other costs, net income was nine cents per share, beating the seven cents per share analysts had been expecting.

Jones, which exited several lines during the quarter and along with the rest of the market suffered from weak holiday shopping season, posted a 17% decline in revenue to $838.5 million from $1.01 billion last year. Analysts expected revenue of $874.8 million. To get a better feel for the retailer's performance during the quarter, same-store sales fell 4.8%.

While the restructuring should be completed by the end of the year, according the company, and hopefully improve operations, Jones also guided 2008 earning in a wide range of $1.25 to $1.50 a share -- to reflect uncertainty in general economic conditions -- and well below analyst expectations of $1.53.

Jones apparel also announced of an agreement with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) where the discount retailer will begin carrying the l.e.i. brand for juniors, junior plus and girls in the summer.

Perhaps it was the agreement with Wal-Mart, or perhaps it was the overall sentiment about retail today, but Jones shares rallied in response. After hitting $17.15 earlier today, JNY shares are now (10:30 a.m.) trading around $16.30, up over 5.5%. Still, JNY shares are far off their 52-week high of $34.73 set in April of last year, but have also come off their low of $12.10 set late January.

Despite the share rally, I'd still be very cautious when it come to Jones Apparel. Sure, I myself am old fashioned when it comes to clothes (or maybe I'm just old) and can actually be found at Jones New York and Nine West, but despite the restructuring, I feel the brands are quite mature, representing little -- if any -- growth going forward.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Cramer on BloggingStocks: Until they trim, forget retailers, restaurants

Filed under: Brinker Intl (EAT), Penney (J.C.)
Doesn't it seem like another day where it is impossible to make money? We have earnings season without any sense that anybody's numbers can be raised. We have an ennui that comes from months of pounding and indecision, and we have stocks that can't seem to go up to save their lives.

Take retail and restaurants. Yet you can't help but wonder whether a Darden (NYSE: DRI) (Cramer's Take) or a Brinker (NYSE: EAT) (Cramer's Take) or a Coach (NYSE: COH) (Cramer's Take) or a Limited (NYSE: LTD) (Cramer's Take) can come back.
Does anyone even know how vicious the bear market in these stocks is? Not all of these companies are brain-dead.

Or how about Morton's (NYSE: MRT) (Cramer's Take), Ruth's (NASDAQ: RUTH) (Cramer's Take), Ruby Tuesday (NYSE: RT) (Cramer's Take)? Can't they be worth something?

Ever since the collapse of private equity these stocks have declined pretty relentlessly. They have worn people down like you wouldn't believe.

But what happens in a turn? Shouldn't we think about putting on a basket of these? Maybe that Mortons/Ruth's/Ruby group?

Their balance sheets are almost all really strong. The consumer can come back. The earnings stream is there.

Costco (NASDAQ: COST) (Cramer's Take) isn't the only retailer in this country doing well, give or take Guess (NYSE: GES) (Cramer's Take) and J.
But the group has been gaffed and gutted. Somehow I think that some of these can come back. I know it's not gonna happen now. Too many questions. But when? When things turn you won't be able to buy these anywhere near where they are.

Yet, in a world where gasoline seems like it is marching to $4/gallon, where McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) (Cramer's Take), which I own for <hlink href="http://secure2.thestreet.com/cap/prm.do?OID=005103&cm_cat=AA&cm_ite=005103&cm_ven=EMAIL">Action Alerts PLUS</hlink>, can be crushed in a heartbeat and when gold's going to $1,000, the conventional wisdom of just forgetting this group seems to be playing out perfectly.

Yet, one has to wonder how a solid chain with good financials and good balance sheet simply can't be a buy soon, especially when it is just six months from lapping some really bad numbers.

What really weighs against it besides the consumer? Too many stores and restaurants. Until we see some closings, some trimmings, some shuttings and some bankruptcies, as we saw in 1990, I guess the operative wisdom is "Forget about it."

If you think that the company won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on JNY.

After hitting a one-year high of $35.54 in January, the stock fell to a 52-week low of $16.73 in August. JNY opened this morning at $22.94. So far today the stock has hit a low of $19.70 and a high of $23.08. As of 10:35, JNY is trading at $20.07, up $0.37 (1.9%). The chart for JNY looks bullish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold rating.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a January bull-put credit spread below the $17.50 range. A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make an 8.7% return in just 3 months as long as JNY is above $17.50 at January expiration. Jones would have to fall by more than 13% before we would start to lose money.

JNY hasn't been below $17.50 by more than a few cents in the past year and has shown support around $18.50 recently. This trade could be risky if the weakening economy puts a damper on consumer spending through the holiday season, but even if that happens, this position could be protected by strong support it has found around $17, where the stock has bottomed twice in the past 3 months.

Since July 5, Fast Retailing has been trying to beat out Dubai investment group Istithmar, which originally offered $825 million for the chain but has since upped its bid to $900 million.

The latest offer is 15% higher than Istithmar's original acquisition price and nearly 140% above what Jones paid to buy-out Barneys in December 2004.

Jones Apparel officials have responded by saying Istithmar has two business days to respond with an offer that, according to a statement published by the Associated Press, is "at least as favorable to Jones as the amended Fast Retailing offer." If Jones decides to deal with Fast Retailing, it will owe the Dubai suitor a $22.7 million break-up fee.

Jones shares have dropped more than 2% today to hit a new 52-week low of $19.79. The stock may be continuing to real from its disappointing earnings report last week.

Beth Gaston Moon is an analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Analyst upgrades 8-02-07: BRCM, JNY, OMX, SYMC and VCLK

Filed under: Analyst reports, Analyst upgrades and downgrades, Good news, OfficeMax Inc (OMX), Symantec Corp (SYMC), Broadcom Corp'A' (BRCM), Penn West Energy Tr (PWE), Qwest Communications Intl (Q), Jones Apparel Group (JNY), ValueClick Inc (VCLK), Stocks to Buy
MOST NOTEWORTHY: British Airways (BAIRY), Symantec (SYMC), OfficeMax (OMX), Qwest (Q) and Metlife (MET) were today's noteworthy upgrades:
The CBOE Volatility Index is a measure of option volatility and effectively a fear index of the market. The VIX jumped from 15.00 area in the beginning of July to a recent reading of 23.67 (see chart). The index being up indicates that there is still fear in the market. The heavy call option activity at the 25 strike represents a bet that fear will increase or a large insurance policy against further market downturns.

Kevin Kersten is an Options Analyst with InvestorsObserver.com. Disclosure note: Mr. Kersten owns and or controls a diversified portfolio of long and short positions that may include holdings in companies he writes about.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jones Apparel earnings disappoint

Filed under: Major movement, Earnings reports, Bad news, Industry, Consumer experience, Competitive strategy, Jones Apparel Group (JNY)

It has been a tough start of the day for Jones Apparel Group (NYSE: JNY) after reporting an unexpected second quarter loss this morning. The stock fell sharply this morning, setting a new 52-week low.

Analysts had expected a profit of $0.31 per share, and were stunned by the loss of $0.44 per share. Excluding some special items, the company earned $0.17 per share, marking the second straight quarter that the company has failed to meet estimates.

The company blamed its poor performance on a tough retail market, which led to weak same stores sales. The troubles that the retail market created forced Jones to slash many of its prices just to get some of its excess inventory out the door.

Also making news this morning was the company's decision to sell its subsidiary Barneys New York Inc. The company has accepted a $900 million offer from Fast Retailing. Jones bought Barneys New York, a chain of upscale department stores, for $400 million.

It has definitely been a tough year for the retailer. For a look at just how bad things have been for JNY stock over the past year, let's close with a look at its 12 month price chart:

In 2006, Jones explored the private equity route but found the offers unattractive.

However, receiving a huge sum for Barneys, the once-bankrupt retailer, might change that. Jones has a $3.1 billion market cap and is expected to generate $431 million in 2007 EBITDA and $447 million in 2008 EBITDA, with much of that being free cash flow.

Trading at 7.7x and 7.5x enterprise value-to-EBITDA according to a Goldman Sachs report released yesterday, this deal that can get financing if private equity offers a 10 to 20% premium.

Jones has good management and good cash flow and provides a very attractive trading opportunity for investors with the stock having dropped from $34 to $28 the past few months. The retailer should be able to receive in the low-to-mid $30s when adjustments are made for the Barneys sale.

Jones looks to me like a good risk-reward trade with not much downside and good upside appreciation.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jones' Barneys New York bids grow

Filed under: Deals, Rumors, Jones Apparel Group (JNY)
It's possible that Istithmar, the private-equity arm of the Dubai government, is grimacing today, after news of a higher bid for Jones Apparel Group Inc's (NYSE: JNY) Barneys New York unit surfaced. Under the terms of their agreement, Jones is allowed to weigh other offers for the Barneys unit until July 22 and can explore bids for the entire company through August 11. Jones said Thursday it received an unsolicited bid from Japanese clothing company Fast Retailing Co Ltd to acquire Barneys for $900 million. That's a 9% premium over Istithmar's $825 million offer.

Fast Retailing, which owns stores in more than 12 countries, says owning Barneys New York would increase its market diversification and boost its revenue. The company recently expanded its Uniqlo casual clothing into the U.S., and said last year it would target the U.S. retail market for acquisitions. Fast Retailing sees "potential top-line synergies" in buying Barneys.

For Jones, though, analysts believe the upscale unit has allowed Jones to "lessen its dependence on selling its wholesale lines to department stores." Should Jones decide to break up the in-place deal with Istithmar, it will have to pay Dubai a $20.6 million breakup fee, or $22.7 million if terminated after July 22. So far, however, the deal is still on the table.

Either way, a purchase of Barneys would show the increasing desire for upscale retail, and the increasing desire of companies from countries like Dubai and Japan to further expand into the U.S. market.

Don't feel too badly for Istithmar if their Barneys deal falls through. The firm also reportedly has interests in clothing retailer Loehmann's Holdings, various commercial buildings in New York and London, and investment bank Perella Weinberg Partners.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jones gets another bid for Barneys

Filed under: Deals, Federated Dept Stores (FD), Jones Apparel Group (JNY)

Istithmar has competition in its quest to acquire Barneys from the Jones Apparel Group (NYSE: JNY). Japan's Fast Retailing Co has come forward with a $900 million bid, $75 million more than Jones had agreed to sell the unit for to the Dubai-based investment group.

Jones says it will begin talks with Fast Retailing. According to the Associated Press, "Headquartered in the western prefecture of Yamaguchi, Fast Retailing Co. operates the popular casual clothing chain Uniqlo. The retailer has expanded aggressively overseas, in such markets as Britain and continental Asia, with ambitions to challenge U.S.-based Gap Inc. It opened its global flagship Uniqlo store in New York City last September."

This should be interesting to follow, as investors from Japan and Dubai are battling for Barneys New York. Fast Retailing's offer is about 9% better than the agreement with Istithmar, and could lead to higher valuations for other high-end department stores like Bloomingdales, owned by Macys (NYSE: M).

This time, the Apple Inc.'s (NASDAQ: AAPL) new revolutionary phone made waves in the U.K. when the BBC reported that mobile phone operator O2 has won the deal to sell the iPhone in the UK. It is also said that the iPhone may be available in time for Christmas. Genius! A spokesman for O2, however, declined to comment on the reports. Anyone who has been expecting a dip in Apple's price was disappointed and got the exact opposite when AAPL shares climbed nearly 5% on Tuesday.

Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) announced yesterday it has received clearance to sell the BlackBerry in China after eight years of trying. RIM expects to start selling its 8700g handset in Chinese shops at the end of next month and has already received 5,000 advance orders. RIMM shares are up 4.8% in pre-market trading (7:41 a.m.).

Jones Apparel Group Inc. (NYSE: JNY), which has already agreed to sell Barneys New York Inc. to Istithmar for $825 million in cash, received an unsolicited bid from Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. to acquire Barneys $900 million in cash. The breakup fee for Jones deal with Istithmar is $20 million. The total value of the deal is $74.8 million. CMPP shares are up nearly 16% in pre-market trading (8:01 a.m.).

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) said it would launch the advanced version of its Xbox 360 game console, Xbox 360 Elite, on October 11 in Japan.

After deciding to start selling in retail chains and striking a deal with Wal-Mart, Dell Inc. (NASDAQ: DELL) today said it will soon start selling its laptops and desktops at Asian retail chains and stores.
